Chiefs’ offensive guard Trey Smith is one of the best interior offensive linemen in football, and he’s set to hit the open market. In over 1,000 offensive snaps this season, Smith was credited with allowing zero sacks. Due to the recent salary cap increase, Kansas City may be able to retain Smith. If he hits free agency, he is sure to have plenty of suitors. According to PFF, Smith could earn a four-year, $86 million contract. Some of Trey Smith’s top landing spots are listed below.
Trey Smith Top Landing Spots
Los Angeles Chargers
Under Jim Harbaugh, the Los Angeles Chargers are seeking a clear identity of winning in the trenches. While L.A. got decent play out of right guard Trey Pipkins III in 2024, Trey Smith would be a clear upgrade. The Chargers have the cap space to be aggressive in free agency this offseason, especially if they decide to cut Joey Bosa. Smith would fit in with the Chargers’ identity and provide better protection for star quarterback Justin Herbert.
New England Patriots
The New England Patriots are in one of the most unique situations in the NFL this offseason. They’ve found their franchise quarterback in Drake Maye, and they have loads of cap space to build around him. With wide receiver Tee Higgins seemingly staying in Cincinnati, the Patriots could see Trey Smith as another option for a splash signing. In 2024, New England’s offensive line was one of the worst in the league. They struggled to protect Maye and failed to produce an effective running game. Signing Smith would be a huge step toward solving both problems.
Chicago Bears
New Chicago Bears head coach Ben Johnson thrived in Detroit with an elite offensive line. He may seek to build something similar in Chicago. The Bears’ offensive line was mediocre at best last season. Caleb Williams was sacked 68 times, which was more than any other quarterback in the NFL. Bringing in Trey Smith would be a move toward solidifying Chicago’s offensive front moving forward. If the Chiefs let Trey Smith walk, expect the Bears to be one of his top landing spots in free agency.
